Your Story. Made Into A Song

Every song begins with a memory. Tell us about the person, place, pet, relationship, adventure, or moment you want captured. We’ll uncover the details that make the story yours and turn them into a personal song.

A desk with a coffee mug that reads 'Hear the memory,' several printed photographs of nature scenes and a dog, a leather-bound journal titled 'Good Stories Live Forever,' a handwritten letter titled 'Hear the Memory Song Intake Questionnaire,' a pen inscribed 'Stories Matter,' and a lit lantern with a sunset view of mountains and trees in the background.
A diagram explains the process of creating a personalized song from stories and memories, including three steps: telling the story with questions, creating the song using music software, and hearing the personalized memory song. The image shows a notebook with story questions, a laptop with music production software, headphones, a smartphone playing a song, and a mug with the words 'Good people great stories better songs.'

From Your Memory to Your Song

You don’t have to know how to write a song. Just tell us what you remember.

Here are two examples of the memories we were given - and what those memories became.

FRONT PORCH

THE MEMORY

Things that belong in the picture?
Pecan pie cooling on the stove. Mason jar of sweet tea with too much ice. The screen door that slapped twice before it caught. Cardboard boxes labeled KITCHEN in Claire’s handwriting. A citronella candle that never quite worked. Biscuit’s tags clicking when he shifted.

Habits, quirks, sayings, inside jokes?
She’d tap the porch rail three times for luck before sitting. Said “well, that’s enough of that” whenever a feeling got too close. Called the train “the 9:40 liar” because it was never on time. Told Biscuit secrets she wouldn’t tell me.

What should the song say?
That some goodbyes don’t look like goodbyes. They look like pie and a porch and a woman who refuses to make a speech. That love can be a hand on a collar. That a house can leave you before you leave it.

THE MEMORY

What do you hear, smell, or see?
Bacon, coffee, pancake batter, the click of the gas stove, old songs on the radio, cold floor in winter, morning sun through yellow curtains.

One particular moment you can still picture?
Mom dancing by herself for maybe ten seconds with the spatula when an old song came on, then catching us watching and saying, “What?” like we were the weird ones.

What do YOU remember that someone else might not?
I remember watching Mom turn away toward the sink once when money was tight. I think she was crying, but she turned around smiling and asked who wanted another pancake. I never told her I noticed.
